Classroom Crisis Intervention Training

Identify what constitutes a crisis within a classroom context. Distinguish between disruptive behaviour and a true crisis, and evaluate the impact of crises on student safety, staff confidence, and the wider learning environment.

Recognise verbal and non-verbal indicators of escalation, signs of emotional distress or agitation, behavioural changes that suggest potential crisis, and individual triggers or risk factors.

Implement clear expectations for conduct and communication. Build positive relationships and a respectful classroom culture. Apply proactive strategies and early intervention approaches to minimise conflict and prevent escalation.

Develop the ability to remain calm in high-stress situations. Apply verbal de-escalation techniques appropriate to educational settings, manage group dynamics, and make safe decisions about whether to continue or pause lessons.

Understand how to protect students and staff during high-risk incidents, remove individuals from unsafe environments when necessary, and identify when additional support is required.

Follow institutional procedures for serious incidents. Understand who to contact, when and how to involve emergency services, and your legal and safeguarding responsibilities.

Complete accurate documentation and incident reporting. Engage in reflective practice and debriefing processes, and implement strategies to rebuild trust and stability following an incident.

Recognise the emotional impact of crisis management and apply strategies to prevent burnout and cumulative stress. Access institutional support networks and implement self-care and peer support strategies.

Collaborate effectively with pastoral, wellbeing, and support teams. Understand referral routes, early help processes, and multi-agency approaches in safeguarding and mental health contexts.

Understand the legal and policy framework underpinning behaviour management, risk assessment, safeguarding, and emergency response within educational settings.
